When is the best time to get deals there, or anywhere else?

I know they ALWAYS have a deal going on... but when does the best one happen? I need 1 or 2 new suits for a relatively low price, but it's not urgent so I can wait for the deal.

You would do better off getting an off-the-rack at a department store.

When they have the "buy one suit, get three months inventory FREE!" sale.

12/27/12

I'm not a big fan of Jos Banks, the fit is just always off in some wierd way. It sucks because they always have the best deals (ie-3 for 1)

Jos. A Bank is always having a sale. Wait until they have a three for one sale. Or just shop at Men's Wearhouse.

Meanwhile, Jos. Abboud & Hart-Schaffner-Marx @ Macy's= $350/suit and last 50% longer than Joseph A Bank. Probably because they are made by adults in the US. Done.

Oops, meant to say Men's Wearhouse. Macy's, you're looking at more like $400-500 on sale, $350-$400 with the right coupon.

I bought a few suits from Jos. A Bank. Their cut fits me well, but they are not great suits past the "entry" level. The biggest problem I've had with them was not the suit, but the "master tailor" (their words, not mine) at their stores suck. I bought 3 suits during their 3-1 sale, had them tailored at the same time. The result was 3 suits with each with a different arm length. I was more than a little ticked. The suits that I have from them will get me by for another year or 2 tops. By then I should be able to afford something nicer.

12/27/12

Find a good tailor that isn't in house at Jos. A Bank, take them to said tailor, end up with a good looking suit.

They have some slimmer fit suits at Jos A, that fit a bit better. They wont last you forever, but are good for your money.

12/27/12

I don't know, don't look at price and equate lasting. I have a black label RL that got elbow holes from the wear. Luckily I know a good tailor.

More expensive = more delicate. If you are a monkey working the keys every day, get something cheap and durable.

lol i think Jos a Bank suits are fine...their buy 1 get 2 free sale is good.

Btw..the ad right on WSO is not bad for Filene's basement: http://filenesbasement.com/campaign/april_suit...
Or just check Nordstrom rack, a lot of designer suits at steep discounts. Or try a Brooks Brothers outlet store

They give away more shit than the Salvation Army which, coincidentally, is where all of their clothing belongs.

So true. There are no "deals" to be had at Jos. A Banks. Shorttheworld? More like short JOSB. The company was actually sued in NY court for misleading advertising that things were "on sale."

Joseph A. Bank is, however, acceptable if you are a commercial banker.

Whatever, I will take it. Just get the shit tailored.

lol, you pretentious fucks.

You're born, you take shit. You get out in the world, you take more shit. You climb a little higher, you take less shit. Till one day you're up in the rarefied atmosphere and you've forgotten what shit even looks like. Welcome to the layer cake, son.

12/27/12

I'm not pretentious.. I just hate their suits. It has nothing to do with the name or the price or even the fact that people say their suits are low quality. I just legitimately have never liked the 2 suits I bought from them.

I'd rather goto Macys and find a decent Ralph Lauren suit for under $500.

One of my shirts from Jos. A Bank already has these small holes on the collar. I only had the shirt for a little longer than 3.5 years. I mean, you'd think they'd be pretty decent, but the reality is that I'm considering writing them off completely and focusing on Brooks Brothers, Macy's etc. and if I really want to get a good quality shirt, tie, suit, etc. go to Saks Fifth Avenue.

You paid like 30 bucks for a dress shirt and you're pissed it only lasted 3 and a half years? What the fuck did you expect?

Nordstrom's Rack is really good, especially for shirts but I don't know if they have stores everywhere

12/27/12

My Jos A Bank suit got totally destroyed (the shoulder pads got loosen) after dry cleaning for three times. I would really stay away from them. Also the Men Warehouse. I am sticking to only Brooks Brothers and Charles Tyrwhitt, and I am not willing to pay more than suits from those stores.

"I am the hero of the story. I don't need to be saved."

12/27/12

I have one Jos A Bank suit and one BB suit. I can definitely tell the Jos A Bank suit is worse quality, but I don't mind it too much. If you don't wear a suit multiple times a week I think Jos A Bank is fine. It should be noted that I do have the highest quality that JSB sells too. I prefer my BB suit but until I bought it my JSB was fine for interviews, career fairs, etc.

The bottom line is that fit is king. It's better to get a cheaper suit and spend the money on a good tailor than to get a ballin suit and get a shitty fit.

what if i get a joseph Abboud suit from Mens Wearhouse would it still be low quality?

You have to look through the label to see what it is being made out of (wool, cotton, etc.). And really know the quality of the fabrics. And also try wearing to make sure that the suit fits perfectly.

Never got a a Jos A Bank suit but I have gotten a bunch of shirts when they have their usual sales. Bought a few a got them tailored and they now fit real well and were cheaper then most BB or CT shirts I get

12/27/12

I know this is an old thread but I agree with this. I have tailored travelers shirts from Jos A Bank and I may try the slim fit travelers for dress shirts. The cost is great and the shirts are decent.

12/27/12

Just wondering how do you guys find a good tailor? How much does it usually cost to get a shirt tailored?

12/27/12

Word of mouth for me. The one I usually go to charges $15 to tailor a shirt. This also out in the suburbs, in NYC/Hoboken I've been quoted at $25+ (not worth it IMO)

12/27/12

American Psycho:

I went through the 3-for-1 bologna special and I have to say it was one of the worst experiences. I should have bought one quality suit instead. Tailoring was not very good and the fits they have in my opinion are too loose.

12/27/12

Go to a real tailor and have them fixed up...they will be fine

bump for the mere reason that this sale is currently on again

12/27/12

Nice. I got bored one day at the mall with my family and wandered into a Jo Banks, mainly because I'd never been in one and wanted to see what it was about, and somehow walked out with so much goddamn stuff, like 3 suits, lord knows how many shirts and ties, and I think underwear and socks for a thousand bucks or so that it felt comical. They're not the greatest quality but they're not absolutely horrible. I think I bought the higher end line though. They're good travel suits when you're visiting a warehouse or production facility or a company in East Jesus where even the execs are wearing polo's and hardly own suits and you don't want to ruin a good suit by spilling coffee, wine or food when the plane hits turbulence. But I'm pretty sure they'll fall apart after a year of wear and tear and some dry cleaning. And then I'll use them as kitchen rags.

4/12/10

^^^ LMAO. The best thing I've read all day. Thanks Marcus.

But no seriously. This is a PSA for all incoming male bankers: Instead of getting 4 crap suits get 2 good ones. Granted I'm a female and now nothing about fit, Hugo Boss, Brooks Brothers and Armani make any guy look good....instantly! I have yet to pay full price for a suit for myself nor for a guy I was "styling". Brooks Brothers doesn't seem to be doing so hot with the recession so you can get some great deals. There is no Nordstrom Rack in Manhattan. Wall Street is not a fashion show but at the same time please don't buy suits at JC Penney, Sears, Old Navy, etc

There is absolutely a Nordstrom Rack in Union Square. It's on the southeastern corner of the square, so I think 14th and Park (or whatever Park changes to down there).

Hi, Eric Stratton, rush chairman, damn glad to meet you.

4/12/10

Getting a cheap suit (200-500) and getting it well tailored can do miracles as opposed to buying a relatively more expensive Hugo Boss or such off the rack.

4/15/10

That implies that one isn't getting the nicer suit well tailored either...

4/15/10

The second you incoming guys pull your first all nighter you will think back on this conversation and laugh...and cry.

4/15/10

Just buy the suit when it is on sale or go to Banana Republic or something. I own suits from all price ranges and if you get them tailored they will look 10x better than an un-tailored expensive suit. Additionally, realize that really expensive suits tend to be made with better, but also delicate. You are going to be beating the shit out of these suits early on and those 2 grand suits will rip/tear/wear really fast. Get the baller suits when you start meeting clients.

If I WERE a 1st year analyst. The buy 1 get 2 free would be hard to pass up... Even if they last a year or two, its worth it to have 3 suits for under a grand.

Just get them tailored and then you wont care when you beat the shit out of them and they tear.

Even Brooks Brothers would be a better choice, and they run plenty of specials as well. Even off-the-rack dept stores have some nice Hart Marx suits on sale around this time.

+1 for Hart Marx. They are made by Hickey, mostly in the US, and what I would recommend to someone who has a limited suit budget.

Jos. A Bank has a deal right now. Buy 1 suit, get 1 suit free, plus get 2 dress shirts and 2 silk ties for free.

If you have the money, get it made-to-measure. Otherwise, local tailors might prove to be diamonds in the rough, too.
